Active loops are any loops that are currently on a machine needle. Machine operations can only be performed on loops that are held by needles. Once a loop is dropped or knit through, the machine can no longer perform an operation on it.
During knitting, many loops in a piece will be inactive because they have already been dropped or knit through; these loops cannot be manipulated further by the machine.
